I purchased the Intova ISS4000 after much internet hunting for my first underwater strobe. I've had a Canon housing for my Canon AS650IS for about 2 years and have used it on two dozen dives. After learning a lot about color correction in Photoshop I realized that I needed to simplify my life with "more light" underwater. I first found the Fantasea Remora unit but it was sold out everywhere. The Intova ISS4000 is the same unit, the only difference being the top-mount spotting light, which the Remora has and the Intova does not. The specifications are the same and the manuals (on their web sites) almost the same.

Functionally the Intova worked well. Its not as powerful as other units out there, but then it costs much less! It gives very good illumination to 6-9 feet even at depths of 110 feet (rated to 180, more than my camera housing). Note that you have to adjust output manually as it is not metered. Its output is variable in a continuous range, although I eventually just left it on maximum for all but shots closer than 3'. I just used the optical flash sync (the camera's flash triggers the remote) and that worked reliably. I forgot to take off the diffuser for longer shots - I'm sure that will extend the range a little bit. It really did improve the lighting on all my pictures, which is the reason for my good rating. I shot about 200 images over 6 dives on one set of 4 AA alkaline batteries and I believe there was still ample power left - my camera used up batteries faster (also 4 AA - its nice having the same battery type for both).

Now the warning part. Not bad, but you might be aware as I had some surprises. First, the unit appears on Amazon as a kit (strobe and flex arm) but they're just two separate units bundled for sale by Cameta Camera - no big deal. The units I got were packed well for shipping by Cameta and arrived fine. But they were in two plain white boxes, with a small sticker that had the Intova part number, and that was it. No manual, no warranty card, no manufacturer information of any kind. Nothing. Now I had already had some contact with Intova (out of Hawaii) while researching the purchase and they were helpful, and I had the user manuals from both the Fantasea and Intova web sites, so I knew where to get the information. Still, it was disappointing that there was nothing to point people in the right direction had they not already done the work I had. I ended up downloading and saving the Fantasea manual as it was a bit more detailed. And in fact it has one very critical instruction that the Intova manual does not! When tightening the battery compartment cover, there is a white arrow on the bottom of the housing, and an almost invisible arrow molded into the clear plastic cover - you need to tighten the cover until the arrows meet AND NO FURTHER!

The second issue, and Intova says they have addressed it, is that at some point during the last day's diving the black plastic ring around the center of the unit cracked in two places, right through the holes for two of the four screws holding it in place. Cameta immediately agreed to an exchange, but I had to ship the unit back (at my expense). I was concerned about the extent of the damage and whether a new unit would have the same problem - and perhaps it would be out of warranty by the time I got to use it again. I called Intova and was informed that it was a known problem with the initial units that shipped in the white boxes. They have since corrected the problem and added more printing to the boxes (although I don't know what they changed). They offered to send me a new ring, which they did. I had also asked for 4 new screws, a manual and warranty information but did not get any of that. When I repaired the ring I found that indeed the ring is mostly cosmetic - its only real function is to provide a loop for the keeper cord for the removable diffuser. Intova said that the problem was the screws were in too tight. When replacing the band I gently tightened the screws. It will be next year or later before I'm able to see if that made the difference, but because its not material to the function of the strobe I'm satisfied with the repair. .Intova ISS 4000 Underwater Slave Flash review By Mark.
